Local SEO Canada basics: how Google picks the businesses on the map
Search "plumber near me" in Moncton, Kelowna or Mississauga and Google shows a map with a short list of businesses before any website. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well-known you are, including links and reviews).
Which Google someone types makes no difference: google.ca and google.com have shown the same local results since 2017. What changes the map is where the searcher is standing: a customer in Halifax sees a Halifax map.
In a country this size, distance is the factor you control least. Your map rankings depend on your own address and your own profile, so that is what we optimize. To reach customers farther away you need genuinely useful pages for each service and town. In Whitespark's 2026 survey, local search experts ranked a dedicated page for each service as the top local organic factor.
The bar is often lower than owners expect. Open Google Maps, search for your own service in your own town and study the top three: count the vague categories, missing hours, photos that are years old and reviews nobody answered. Every one of those gaps is ground you can take with work you control, not with a bigger budget. The free audit does this comparison for you.

Industries we work with
Trades and home services
Plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies and roofers usually travel to the customer, so Google treats them as service-area businesses. They win with the right category, a page per core service, real job photos and recent reviews.
Clinics and health practices
Dental, physiotherapy, chiropractic and veterinary clinics are storefronts where distance and reviews decide who gets the call. Accurate hours, a booking link and a reply to every review matter as much as the ranking.
Lawyers, accountants and other professionals
Clients choose on trust. Reviews that mention the actual service, and pages that answer common questions before people book, give a firm an edge over a bare directory listing.
Restaurants, retail and hospitality
"Open now" and "near me" searches reward complete, current profiles: hours, menus or products, photos and attributes such as a patio or wheelchair access.
Multi-location brands and franchises
Each location needs its own accurate profile, its own page on your website and matching listings. Our reports split results by location.
Manufacturers, suppliers and B2B
Buyers search for a product plus a place, such as "service truck bodies red deer". Our past client TK Truck Body ranks #3 for that search on Google Canada today (checked October 15, 2026), and Cogan, a Canadian manufacturer, ranks #1 there for "mezzanines".
How we work with businesses across Canada
From our Fort McMurray office, we can work remotely with businesses anywhere in Canada, with calls on Google Meet or Zoom during Alberta business hours. You add us as a manager on your Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics, and can remove us at any time. We never create virtual offices, mailbox addresses or duplicate profiles: Google does not allow them, and they put a real business at risk.
Local SEO services Canada-wide
Everything that moves you up the map, in one plan
Every local SEO Canada plan we offer covers your Google Business Profile, listings, reviews and website, because Google looks at all of them.
Google Business Profile optimization
We fix categories, services, hours, descriptions, photos and attributes, then keep the profile active with posts and fresh photos. We never add keywords to your business name, which can get a profile suspended.
Canadian citation cleanup
We make your business name, address and phone number match across the major Canadian online directories, Bing and Apple Maps, your chamber of commerce and your industry's directories, so Google can trust that your business is real.
Review generation system
A simple text or email request after every job, sent to every customer, not only the happy ones, with your business name, contact details and an unsubscribe link, as Canada's anti-spam law (CASL) requires. In BrightLocal's 2026 US survey, 74% of consumers said they only care about reviews from the last three months, so a steady routine beats a one-time push.
Local landing pages
One genuinely useful page for each core service and each town you serve, with real detail, photos and answers to common questions. Never city-name swaps that Google treats as doorway pages.
Technical SEO and mobile speed
Fast, mobile-friendly pages, accurate business schema and Search Console fixes, so Google can crawl and trust every page. We test every page on a phone as well as a desktop.
AI search visibility
Clear, consistent facts about your business across your website, profile and listings, so ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews have accurate information to draw on when they describe local businesses like yours.
Call, form and booking tracking
We track calls, quote requests and bookings from your profile and website, so your report shows inquiries, not only rankings.
Conversion fixes
Click-to-call buttons, short quote forms and clear next steps on your key pages, so more visitors turn into inquiries.
You own every account (Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics) and all content we create. If you cancel, it all stays with you.
Google Business Profile optimization: a checklist for Canadian businesses
Many profiles are set up once and then left alone. Check yours against this list, based on Google's own Business Profile guidelines, or let us do it in the free audit.
Business name exactly as on your signage. Adding a city or keywords breaks Google's rules and can lead to a suspension.
The most specific primary category, plus only the secondary categories that truly apply.
Service areas by city or postal code, up to 20, within about two hours of driving from your base.
Real hours, plus holiday hours for Canada Day, Thanksgiving and the winter holidays.
A local phone number you control, not a call-centre line, and a link to the page for that location.
New photos of your team, vehicles, premises and finished work every month.
A reply to every review, positive or negative.
Storefront, service-area or both: set up your profile the way Google expects
Google sorts local businesses into three types, and getting this wrong is a common reason a good business is missing from the map. Storefronts such as clinics, shops and restaurants show their address. Service-area businesses such as plumbers and mobile mechanics travel to the customer and should hide their address, Google says. Hybrid businesses, like a garage that also offers roadside service, can show both, as long as staff receive customers at that address during the stated hours.
Working from home is fine: Google's own example is a plumber who runs the business from home and hides that address. Renting a mailing address where you do not operate is not; Google says such virtual offices are not eligible.
Service areas describe where you work; they do not pull in map rankings from far away. A Brampton contractor who wants Oakville jobs needs a strong Oakville page that can rank in regular results, real projects there and reviews from customers there.
We check your Google Business Profile, map rankings, reviews and listings against nearby competitors, then send the first fixes we would make and a clear written quote.
Affordable SEO Canada: what low-cost plans cut, and what we never cut
Many SEO retainers are built for national brands that compete across the whole country. A single-location business usually needs something narrower: a strong profile, clean listings, a review routine and a few excellent pages. That focus is what keeps our local SEO packages affordable, and we size each one to your locations and your market after the free audit.
Focus has limits. If your market is crowded, say personal injury law in downtown Toronto, a small local plan will not be enough, and we will tell you so after the audit.
Before you hire anyone, including us, watch for these shortcuts:
Bought or rewarded reviews. Google can remove them, block new reviews for a set period and warn customers that fake reviews were removed.
Keywords or a city stuffed into your business name.
Paid directory bundles. The Competition Bureau has warned Canadian businesses about directory scams, so double-check before writing a cheque.
City pages with only the town name swapped, which Google's spam policies class as doorway abuse.
Long lock-in contracts, and profiles or analytics set up in the agency's name instead of yours.
Reviews, French and anti-spam: the Canadian rules behind local marketing
Local SEO in Canada touches three sets of rules, and we build every plan to respect them. This is general information, not legal advice.
Reviews. The Competition Bureau said in January 2024 that employees who review their employer must disclose that connection, even when the review is honest. Our review system asks every customer, with no rewards and no filtering.
French. Article 52 of Quebec's Charter of the French Language requires commercial publications, including website content, to be in French, and in March 2023 the OQLF reported that a company had paid a fine over a website that was not in French. If you serve Quebec customers, plan French versions of your location pages and profile details, written or reviewed by a fluent speaker, never raw machine translation.
Follow-up messages. Under Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), an inquiry gives you implied consent to send commercial electronic messages, including emails and texts, for six months, and a purchase gives you an existing business relationship for two years. To keep in touch beyond that, ask for express consent. Every message must identify your business, include your contact information and offer an unsubscribe that takes effect within 10 business days.

Pete H.Owner, Auto KingMobile Mechanics, QLD & NSW, Australia
“We needed to win mobile mechanic searches suburb by suburb, and Preferic delivered. We rank #1 for mobile mechanic in Castle Hill and Hornsby, with 166 keywords in Google’s top 3. For a local service business, they are the best SEO agency we have found.”
Jay L.Founder & Director, Smartland Early LearningChildcare, QLD & NSW, Australia
“Parents search for childcare by suburb, so local rankings matter more than anything for us. In three months our organic traffic is up over 40%, and we’re now top 3 for childcare in Tugun and Maroochydore. That’s exactly where we needed to be.”
Emily M.Owner, Treasured Dance StudioMeridian, Idaho, USA
“Our old website just didn’t feel like us. Preferic moved it to WordPress and rebuilt it from scratch. Now parents find the right class in seconds, and we’re getting new inquiries from families across the Boise area.”
It depends on how competitive your category is, how many locations you run and what your website needs, so we do not publish one price for everyone. A single clinic in a smaller city needs far less work than a franchise across the GTA. After the free audit you get a clear written quote scoped to your business. Every local SEO Canada plan is month to month, with no setup fees hidden in the fine print.
Is cheap SEO worth it, or can it hurt my business?
Affordable SEO services are worth it when the low price comes from a focused scope, and harmful when it comes from shortcuts. A single-location business often needs a well-built profile, clean listings, steady reviews and a few strong pages, and that is where our smaller plans focus. Walk away from anyone selling bought reviews, keyword-stuffed business names or hundreds of directory links, because those waste your budget and can get a Google profile suspended.
Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
The usual reasons are an unverified or suspended profile, the wrong primary category, a service-area setup that hides you, or competitors with more recent reviews closer to the searcher. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so the free audit checks all three and tells you which one is holding you back.
You are in Alberta. Can you do local SEO for my business in Ontario, BC or Atlantic Canada?
Yes. Local SEO suits remote work, because it happens inside your Google Business Profile, listings and website, where you add us as a user and keep ownership. Your map rankings come from your own address, profile and reputation, not ours. The main thing we need from you is fresh photos of your team, premises and finished jobs, so we send a short shot list your staff can fill from a phone. Calls with our local SEO Canada team happen on Google Meet or Zoom during Alberta business hours.
How many Google reviews do I need to show up on the map?
There is no magic number. Google says prominence, one of its three main local factors, includes how many reviews a business has, so the practical target is to keep pace with, then pass, the nearby businesses you compete with. Ratings and replies matter to customers too: in BrightLocal's 2026 US survey, 68% of consumers said they only use businesses rated four stars or more, and 89% expect owners to respond.
Can I offer customers a discount for leaving a Google review?
No. Google's review policy bans offering payment, discounts or free goods and services in exchange for reviews, and it bans asking only your happy customers. The Competition Bureau has also warned Canadian businesses against offering incentives for positive reviews. What works is asking every customer right after the job, with a direct link, and replying to every review, good or bad.
When will I start getting more calls from local SEO?
Nobody can honestly give you a date, and Google itself says no one can promise a #1 ranking. What we can tell you is where movement tends to show first: after we fix a neglected profile, such as a wrong category or missing hours, the early signs are usually more profile calls, direction requests and website clicks. Crowded big-city categories take longer. Your monthly report tracks those numbers, so you can judge progress yourself.
Can you manage several locations or a franchise?
Yes. We manage every location's Google Business Profile, keep each location's listings consistent, build a useful page for every location and send a report for each one, so weak branches stand out. Google asks for a website that represents each individual location, so we link every profile to its own location page rather than your homepage. Auto King, a multi-location mobile mechanic in Australia, uses this structure and ranks #1 for "mobile mechanic Castle Hill" and "mobile mechanic Hornsby".
We already run Google Ads. Do we still need local SEO?
Usually, yes, because they do different jobs. Ads buy a sponsored spot for as long as you keep paying, while Google says there is no way to pay for a better position in its local results. Those unpaid map rankings come from relevance, distance and prominence, the three things local SEO works on. A common setup is ads for your most profitable services while your profile and reviews build rankings you do not pay for per click.
