SEO Alberta: why Edmonton, Calgary and the North need different plans
For SEO, Alberta is not one market. A roofer in Airdrie, a clinic in St. Albert and a fabrication shop in Nisku all need Google to send them work, but their buyers search differently and from different distances. That is why we run one team and one method, tuned to where your customers actually are.
Edmonton and Calgary hold most of the competition. Statistics Canada counted 40,075 businesses with employees in Edmonton and 57,780 in Calgary in June 2025. The mix differs: health care and social assistance is the most common type of employer business in Edmonton, while professional services leads Calgary by a wide margin. One keyword plan rarely fits both.
Regional hubs serve huge trade areas. ATB describes Grande Prairie as a logistics and service hub for over 300,000 people across northwestern Alberta and British Columbia, and Wood Buffalo counted 107,740 people in its 2025 municipal census, including work-camp residents. Suppliers in hubs like these often sell across a wide region, so many of their buyers are searching from another town.
Then there is the oil price. Mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction made up 26.0% of Alberta's GDP in 2024, yet only about 5.1% of Alberta's labour force was in that sector at the 2021 census. Most Albertans do not work in energy, but their customers' spending still moves with it, so visibility you own matters when ad budgets get cut.

Industries we work with
Energy services, fabrication and industrial suppliers
Buyers search by product and place, such as "service body edmonton", then compare specs before they call. We build product and capability pages that can rank well beyond your own town, with the details a procurement team needs to forward.
Construction and contractors
Construction is the most common type of employer business in Strathcona County, Airdrie and Grande Prairie (Statistics Canada, June 2025), and Airdrie grew 20.3% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses. New neighbourhoods bring homeowners who have never heard of you, so a fast site, a clear quote form and steady reviews still set a contractor apart.
Clinics and health practices
Health care and social assistance is the most common type of employer business in Edmonton. Google's map results weigh distance to the searcher, so a clinic mostly competes with nearby practices; precise categories, a working booking link and recent reviews help it stand out.
Professional services
Professional services is the most common type of employer business in Calgary (Statistics Canada, June 2025). Their clients read several pages before reaching out, so we write content around the questions they ask, the approach we used for JTC CPAs (USA): 0 to 285 organic clicks a month in 16 months.
Retail and hospitality
Retail is the most common type of employer business in Red Deer (Statistics Canada, June 2025). Many shoppers check their phones before they head out, so accurate hours, photos and directions on your Google profile help turn searches into foot traffic.
How we work with businesses across Alberta
We work from our Fort McMurray office and serve the rest of Alberta remotely, and we say so plainly: no pretend offices in Edmonton, Calgary or Red Deer. You meet your strategist on Google Meet or Zoom during Alberta business hours, get a written report and a call each month, and hear back within one business day. Because map rankings follow your own address, the profile we optimize is yours, not ours.

Everything an Alberta business needs to get found and get called
Start with what matters most now and add more as you grow. Every change is explained in plain English.
City pages that earn their place
One genuinely useful page for each city or region you serve, built from your own projects, photos and reviews there. No real local substance, no page: Google's spam policies can treat thin city pages as doorways.
Google Business Profile optimization
Your profile set up the way Google's guidelines expect: the right primary category, services, photos, posts and a booking link. If customers do not come to you, we hide your address and list the areas you really serve.
Supplier and product SEO for B2B
Spec-rich product, capability and industry pages that buyers and project managers can find, compare and forward, for searches like "service body edmonton" or "mezzanines".
Technical SEO and site health
Slow pages, crawl errors, broken links and duplicate titles fixed in order of impact, starting with the pages that already bring in inquiries. Each fix is checked in Search Console, not just ticked off a list.
Website design and conversion fixes
Sharper headlines, tap-to-call buttons, quote forms that ask only what you need, and faster mobile pages, so the visitors SEO brings in actually get in touch. Full rebuilds are quoted in writing first.
Reviews and reputation, the clean way
A simple routine that asks every real customer for a Google review and helps you reply to each one. No paid, fake or staff reviews: Google bans them, and the Competition Bureau warns that fake or undisclosed reviews can break the Competition Act.
AI search visibility
Clear answers, consistent business details and structured data, so Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and other assistants describe your business accurately. No one controls what those tools say; we work on the information they read about you.
Google Ads, Meta ads and social media
Need a digital marketing agency Alberta owners can use for everything? Add Google Ads, Meta ads and social posting, quoted separately in writing and covered in the same monthly call.
From day one, every login is yours: Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics, website and content. If you ever leave, there is nothing to hand back.
SEO that survives Alberta's oil price cycles
When oil prices fall, many Alberta owners cut marketing first, and paid ads are the easiest line to cut. Organic rankings, a well-kept Google Business Profile and genuine reviews behave more like assets: they keep working through a slow quarter and are still yours when demand returns.
That is why every engagement is month to month. Scale the work down during a quiet stretch, keep the foundations in place, and step back up when the phones get busy, with no penalty and no starting over.
Keep your hours, service areas and contact details accurate, even when you scale back
Use slower months for technical fixes and evergreen content
Ranking one Alberta business in several cities, without doorway pages
Many Alberta companies sell far beyond their own town: a Nisku fabricator quotes jobs in Fort McMurray, a Red Deer contractor works up and down Highway 2. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot move your address, so one location rarely appears in the map pack of a city hours away. Your website is how you reach those buyers.
Past client TK Truck Body, an Edmonton truck body manufacturer, shows what that looks like. As of October 2026 it ranks #1 on Google Canada for "truck body parts edmonton", #3 for "service truck bodies red deer" and #3 for "truck bodies grand prairie", a misspelling real buyers type. One website, three Alberta markets.
The method is easy to describe and hard to fake: a genuinely different page for each service and region you really serve, backed by real projects, reviews and details. Google's spam policies name city pages that funnel visitors to one page as doorway abuse. That is the standard any SEO agency Alberta businesses hire should meet.
A strategist reviews your website, Google Business Profile and the local competitors you face, then sends you what to fix first.
Grants and free help in Alberta: an honest reality check
Owners often ask whether the government will pay for SEO. The federal Canada Digital Adoption Program is closed, and we are not aware of a current government grant that pays for ongoing SEO in Alberta. Better to hear that now than after a pitch built on funding that does not exist.
There is useful free help, though. Business Link runs a free Digital Marketing Program for Alberta-registered small businesses that already have a website: four 45-minute one-on-one virtual sessions with a Digital Strategist to build a six-month marketing strategy. Some chambers add their own: Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce members can get up to 8 free hours of digital marketing coaching. BDC's LIFT program offers loans, not grants, and its digital path is limited to firms above a minimum annual revenue.
A strategy from those sessions only pays off once someone carries it out, month after month. We can take it from there: profile fixes, new pages and monthly reporting measured against the targets in your plan. We are independent, with no partnership with or endorsement from any of these programs.
Buyers are switching to Canadian suppliers. Will they find you?
Supplier switching is already happening. In a CFIB member survey in March 2025, 32% of responding small business owners had already shifted to suppliers or markets within Canada. For Alberta fabricators, distributors and trades, that is an opening: a buyer hunting for a new Canadian source has to find you online before they can call you.
Make the choice easy. Say where you build, stock and ship from, list the provinces you deliver to, and put specs, lead times, certifications and photos of real projects on the page. Those details help a buyer shortlist you, and they help Google and AI assistants understand what you make and where you work.

Pete H.Owner, Auto KingMobile Mechanics, QLD & NSW, Australia
“We needed to win mobile mechanic searches suburb by suburb, and Preferic delivered. We rank #1 for mobile mechanic in Castle Hill and Hornsby, with 166 keywords in Google’s top 3. For a local service business, they are the best SEO agency we have found.”
Josh M.Director of Technology & Training, JTC CPAsAccounting Firm, USA
“We launched as a new firm with a website nobody could find. Our organic traffic has nearly quadrupled since, and we now show up on page one for ‘what is a lease’, a term searched 7,800 times a month. For a young firm, that visibility is huge.”
Jay L.Founder & Director, Smartland Early LearningChildcare, QLD & NSW, Australia
“Parents search for childcare by suburb, so local rankings matter more than anything for us. In three months our organic traffic is up over 40%, and we’re now top 3 for childcare in Tugun and Maroochydore. That’s exactly where we needed to be.”
It depends on how competitive your market is, how many locations you run and what your website needs: a Calgary law firm and a Lacombe landscaper need very different amounts of work. After your free audit you get a clear written quote in Canadian dollars, with no setup fees hidden in the fine print. Every engagement is month to month, so you can scale the work up or down with your season.
Do you work with businesses everywhere in Alberta?
Yes. We serve businesses across Alberta, from Lethbridge and Medicine Hat to Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray, working from our Fort McMurray office and remotely everywhere else. Working remotely does not limit your map rankings, because those depend on your own address and Google Business Profile, which we optimize for you.
How do I know the work is actually being done?
You can check it yourself. Every task is logged with what changed and why, and the work itself happens in accounts you own, so Search Console, your Google Business Profile and your website show it at any time. Each month you also get a written report and a call covering rankings, calls and form inquiries. If something is not moving, we tell you and explain what we will change next.
Should I pause SEO when oil prices drop and work slows down?
Usually it is better to scale down than to stop. Rankings, reviews and a well-kept Google profile keep working through a slow quarter, while paid ads stop the day the budget does. Because we work month to month, you can reduce the scope, protect the pages that already bring in inquiries, and step back up when demand returns.
I serve customers across Alberta from one yard. Can I show up in Google Maps in other towns?
Partly. If customers do not visit your yard, Google treats you as a service-area business: you hide your address and list the areas you serve, which Google says should stay within about two hours of driving. Map results still favour businesses close to the searcher, so for towns farther out we build useful location pages on your website that can rank in the regular results.
What can realistically change in the first 90 days?
Mostly the foundations: technical fixes, a properly set up Google Business Profile, cleaner listings and your first new pages. Searches in smaller centres such as Lacombe or Cold Lake often have fewer strong competitors, while city-wide terms in Calgary or Edmonton usually take several months of steady work. We will not promise dates or rankings, and Google's own hiring advice warns against anyone who promises a #1 ranking.
Who owns my accounts and website if I stop working with you?
You do, always. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics, website and every piece of content are set up in your name from the first day, and we work only through access you grant. If you leave, you remove our access and everything stays exactly where it is: your pages, your reviews and your data. Any SEO company Alberta owners are considering should be willing to put the same promise in writing.
Do you also handle Google Ads, web design and social media?
Yes. Alongside SEO we design and rebuild websites, manage Google Ads and Meta ads, and handle social posting, so you deal with one team instead of three vendors. Anything beyond SEO is quoted separately, in writing and in Canadian dollars, before work starts, and it is covered in the same monthly report and call.
What happens after I send the audit form?
We reply within one business day. A strategist then reviews your website, Google Business Profile and the competitors ranking in your area, and sends you a short list of the fixes that matter most, with a recommended plan and a clear written quote. There is no contract to sign and no hard sell, and if you would rather talk it through, you can book a strategy call.
